SAUNA
Kaupinoja sauna is located on the shore of Lake Näsijärvi near Kaupinranta. There has been a sauna on the site since 1977, but it has undergone many transformations. The sauna was last reopened on April 25, 2010 after a thorough renovation, which was carried out due to the fire that raged in the sauna on November 15, 2008.
Kaupinoja sauna is one of the largest avantosaunas in Finland. About 60 people fit on the benches at a time. Approximately 84,000 visits are made to Kaupinoja sauna every year. It is busiest in the winter months, when on busy evenings there can be over 500 visitors, and the Christmas sauna can accommodate 400 sauna-goers during four hours.
The sauna’s huge kiuas contains 800 kg of kiuas-stones, which are replaced monthly on the maintenance day as a cleaning job. Every day, 1 – 1.5 mot (cubes) of large logs are burned in the sauna’s pesä. The logs are hauled and stacked to be used in the sauna with volunteer work. During the opening hours, the sauna is at its hottest, so that there is enough heat for the last saunas of the evening as well. Kaupinoja sauna is known for its strong löyly’s and the reason for the popularity of many regular customers.
The sauna building is owned by the city of Tampere, but the sauna is hosted and managed by Tampereen Talviuimarit ry. Heating is provided by staff hired by Pineal G Vitality oy. Otherwise, the sauna is taken care of by volunteers: we chop the wood with volunteer work, change the stones in the kiuas, take care of small repairs and accessories, take care of the Sauna Lounge’s equipment and major cleaning, and host events.
Kaupinoja sauna is open practically every day, except for the second Tuesday of every month, when maintenance work is done there. In the summer, the sauna is closed for a couple of weeks for annual maintenance. Exceptions will be notified separately.
The staff handles the sauna payments: one-time payment, discount card or annual card. The staff also sells drinks and sausages to grill. You do not need, and cannot, book a sauna visit in advance. If the sauna is overcrowded, the staff has the right to make customers wait for their turn.
The Sauna Lounge connected to the sauna and the small electrically heated sauna connected to it can be rented together for sauna evenings, parties, training events, etc. The large public sauna is not rented for private use.
In the sauna, the hot air rises upwards, so the upper benches are always the hottest. Because the steam always hits the opposite corner first, it is the least hot at the bottom next to the kiuas, even though it may seem strange. You should take a wooden seat for sauna (pefflet) or bring your own. Likewise, we recommend wearing a cap and some slippers or diving shoes in the sauna as well. There is a shelf in front of the staff’s booth where you can borrow slippers if you don’t have your own.
The Rules of Kaupinoja’s Sauna
1. Swimsuit is mandatory.
2. Washing clothes in the sauna is prohibited for hygiene reasons. Similarly, for example, the use of sauna honey or oils is prohibited in the sauna. Don’t dye your hair or shave in the shower – and avoid perfumes in the dressing rooms.
3. Doing sauna while intoxicated is prohibited, the staff has the right to remove an intoxicated person from the sauna for safety reasons.
4. The changing room, toilets and grill are only available to those who have paid the sauna fee.
5. The grill is only for frying sausages – for hygiene reasons.
6. The patio behind the lounge can only be used by those renting the Takkatupa.
7. Smoking is only allowed near the ashtrays. Put snuff and nicotine bags in the trash, not in the yard.
8. Parking is only allowed at the designated parking areas.
9. Be considerate of fellow sauna goers, be calm when throwing the löyly and using your voice.
